ARTICLE I: NAME AND PURPOSE
Section 1: The name of this organization shall be the Cedar Ridge High School (CRHS) Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools (NHS).
Section 2: The purpose of this chapter shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Cedar Ridge High School.
ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP
Section 1: Membership shall be known as active and graduate. Active members shall become graduate members at graduation.
Section 2: Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and shall be based on the criteria of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
Section 3: Eligibility
ARTICLE III: SELECTION OF MEMBERS
Section 1: The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council consisting of five faculty members approved by the principal. The chapter adviser(s) shall be the sixth (and seventh), non-voting, ex-officio member(s) of the faculty council.
Section 2: Prior to selection, the following shall occur:
Section 4: Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony.

ARTICLE IV: DISCIPLINE AND DISMISSAL
Section 1: Any member who falls below the standards of scholarship, leadership, character, or service may be dismissed from the Cedar Ridge High School chapter of the National Honor Society. A member of the National Honor Society is expected to maintain his or her academic standing and take an active role in service and leadership to his or her school community by earning the required number of service hours each semester. Only service opportunities sponsored by NHS and completed with NHS will count toward maintaining an active membership.
Section 2: Grades will be reviewed by advisers mid-year. Members who fall below the standards that were the basis for their selection shall receive written notification and be given sufficient time to correct the deficiency.
Section 3: Violation of the law, school regulations, or the school conduct code (such as the use of profanity, failure to comply, unexcused absence, excessive tardiness, cheating, etc.) can result in immediate dismissal of a member.

ARTICLE V: OFFICERS
Section 1: The officers of the chapter shall be the Executive Officers, also known as the service community leaders. They are of equal rank.
Section 2: New officers will be self-nominated and self-represented. Executive Officers will be approved via active member vote plus adviser(s) approval.
ARTICLE VI: EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Section 1: The executive committee shall consist of the Executive Officers of the chapter and the Chapter Adviser(s).
Section 2: The executive committee shall have general supervision of the affairs of the chapter between its business meetings, make recommendations to the chapter, and determine and perform such other duties as are specified in the chapter bylaws. All actions and recommendations of the executive committee shall be subject to the review of the chapter membership and approval of the adviser(s).
Section 3: The executive committee shall have the responsibility for ensuring that chapter activities and procedures follow school policy and regulations.
Section 4: Any disputes that occur regarding the executive committee will be referred to the adviser(s).
ARTICLE VII: MEETINGS
Section 1: Meetings of this chapter shall be held monthly during the school year, unless announced otherwise.
Section 2: Meeting Attendance
ARTICLE VIII: ACTIVITIES
Section 1: The chapter will determine service projects for each year based upon member interest and adviser and principal approval. School board approval may need to be obtained in some situations.
Section 2: These projects shall have the following characteristics: Fulfill a need within the school or community; Have the support of the administration and the faculty; Be appropriate and educationally defensible; Be well planned, organized, and executed; Be announced and available to all members.
Section 3: All members shall regularly participate in these projects.
Section 4: All members must complete a total of at least 20 NHS sanctioned service hours; these will be split into two 10-hour requirements, one per semester. Service hours given to other organizations or clubs may not count for NHS service hours, unless approved by the adviser(s) in extenuating circumstances.
Section 5: Members must also participate in the following NHS sponsored projects, barring an excused absence. Failure to participate in required service activities will result in dismissal from NHS.
ARTICLE IX: RECOGNITION
Section 1: Each member who remains active throughout his or her enrollment in NHS, earns meets service requirements, and graduates with a final GPA that meets the criteria for eligibility will be granted the privilege of wearing the NHS honor cord at graduation.
ARTICLE X: DUES
Section 1: One-time dues of $20.00 will be paid upon acceptance into the NHS and prior to induction. A hardship waiver will be offered to accepted students.

- Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be members of the junior or senior class.
- Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 unweighted. The scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for selection to membership during the next application window.

- Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility.
- Students who are eligible scholastically (“candidates”) shall be notified and must complete an application form for further consideration for selection.
- To be eligible for membership the candidate must be a member of the junior or senior class.
- The general faculty will be offered the opportunity to evaluate candidates.
- The anonymous Faculty Council shall review the anonymous application forms and faculty evaluations to determine membership using an official evaluation form.
Section 4: Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony.
Section 5: Membership Transfer
- An active NHS member who transfers to CRHS from another school must provide a letter signed by the principal or adviser(s) from the previous institution indicating the status of his or her membership in order to transfer the membership.
- An NHS member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from the principal or chapter adviser to the CRHS adviser(s) shall be accepted immediately and automatically as a member in the Cedar Ridge chapter. No dues will be required.
- Transfer students who become members of the CRHS chapter of the NHS must maintain the minimum CRHS membership requirements to retain membership status.

- When a student is dismissed or resigns, he or she is no longer a member and may never again be considered for membership in the National Honor Society.

Section 2: Meeting Attendance
- All chapter members are expected to attend all regularly-scheduled chapter meetings. In case of inability to attend, members should submit written notification to the adviser(s), before the meeting occurs. Each member will be allowed two unexcused missed meetings per semester.
- CRHS students that attend classes off-campus (e.g., attending classes at Durham Tech, etc.) will be excused from attending meetings AFTER providing proof of off-campus school participation to the adviser(s). These students must agree to watch a recording of each missed meeting presentation, and they must email their service community leader about missed information after each meeting.
- After a third unexcused missed meeting in a semester, members will be considered inactive and will be considered for dismissal from NHS by the Faculty Council.
ARTICLE VIII: ACTIVITIES

- Inductions: juniors as participants and seniors as attendees and helpers.
- Fundraising efforts (if held): students do not have to contribute fiscally to be considered compliant.
